MassWORKS Project

Construction will begin again March 23rd

Hopefully, winter is over and spring is upon us. Construction on the MassWORKS project will begin on March 23rd. Work will pick up where it left off before the holidays. The current project status is outlined below.

  • Curbing 99% complete. Remaining curb only at utility pole locations.
  • Gravel box, behind curbing, under new sidewalk, 75% complete.
    • All incomplete areas were made safe and passable by foot traffic for the winter.
    • Installation of new driveway aprons were 80% complete.
  • All pole and overhead utility work were completed.
  • All major conduit crossings beneath the roadways were completed.

What to expect this spring…

  • TRAFFIC DELAYS and GREAT PROGRESS in making these critical safety improvements.
  • Completion of sidewalk and driveway apron installation.
  • Loaming and seeding of new grass strips.
  • Installation and commission of new traffic signals.
  • Transitional restoration (behind new sidewalks) of private driveways, walkways, lawns and gardens.
  • Roadway pavement grinding.
  • Roadway re-pavement.
  • Traffic line painting.
  • Sign installation.

As during the fall work, construction will mostly take place Monday – Friday between 7:00 am and 3:30 pm. Construction will continue through the entire spring season until the project is completed in June or early July. When the roadways are ground-up and repaved, these operations, by traffic necessity, will be done in off-peak overnight operations. These operations will likely not take more than a few nights to complete. Separate notice will be distributed to affected households well in advance of any night operation.

The roads will be kept safe and police details will direct traffic to keep it moving. The road will seldom be closed. However, some level of traffic disruption is likely to result in delays during peak commuter hours.  Avoidance of Main Street and Wattaquadock Hill Road, particularly during peak commuting hours, is recommended. If avoiding these streets is impossible, then considerable delays should be expected.

During the onset of the season…

  • Construction will concentrate on completion of sidewalk and driveway aprons.
    • Separate notice will be made to each homeowner well in advance of start of any driveway work.
    • Existing driveways will be stripped of pavement.
    • Gravel in these driveways will be graded and kept passable to all users.after
    • These driveways will be formed for concrete and poured the next day
      • Users of these driveways will not be able to cross the concrete for two days after the concrete is poured. BPD will allow on-street overnight parking for resident vehicles displaced by this work. Parking is also available at the Town Common and Houghton Building parking lots.
  • Work will then shift to restoration work adjacent to the sidewalks.
  • Work will then shift to signal/electrical work.
