11/3/11 10:00AM Meeting with National Grid Representatives, Town Administrator Don Lowe, Chief Vin Alfano ,EMD Co-Director Andrew Bagdonas, and Representative Kate Hogan at the Public Safety Building.
Power crews have energized the feeder lines into Bolton. (Main Street and Berlin Road). They now will go back and go down each and every side road and common and/or long driveway to clear the wires. Power will slowly be restored to side roads and common driveways along Berlin Road from the Berlin line forward to the center of Town.
Wattaquadock Hill Road is being worked on, and the remainder should be powered on this afternoon. Crews will then begin to clean and power the side roads and common driveways off of Wattaquadock Hill Road.
There is a chance that they will not finish the Berlin and Wattaquadock Hill Road side road runs by tonight. National Grid has assured us that they will make every effort to clean and power those lines as quickly as possible.
On the West side of town, National Grid is working on clearing and powering the side streets and common driveways. They expect most of the roads connecting to Main Street to be powered later today. Sugar Road near Colonial Candy remains one of the worst sections of town at this point, and will require additional tree/line crews to clear the lines before they can be powered on. The northern section of Sugar Road is powered through the Ayer substation, and will also be worked on today and tomorrow.
National Grid has explained the process to us in great detail as to how power is restored. First they must power the entire feeder lines into town- those are Main Street and Berlin Road. Luckily for Bolton this includes many of our critical infrastructure and key resource buildings. (Government offices, schools, senior housing). After the main line is repaired, they clear the side lines and power those up. It is a simple “center out” approach, with the center being the substation which powers the main feeder lines. For us, that is Sterling, Northboro, and Ayer. Bolton lies at the end of each of these main feeder lines. This means that work must be completed on the main lines in the towns which are between us and the substation. The side roads are currently being opened in
all towns, not just Bolton. Rest assured that crews are working very hard in Bolton to get power back to as many customers as possible. A significant portion of Bolton come back online by the end of day today.
