For the latest photos of the library under construction, including views that can't be seen from the street, see our new website (which, coincidentally, is also under construction!) at http://www.boltonpubliclibrary.org.
Sewer and water lines have been installed up to the stone wall. Interior stairs and railings are in process. Vent board is being installed on the roof. Exterior walls are being framed.
Coming up: rough plumbing, and the elevator shaft.

Backfilling is complete and has been inspected. Floors were poured yesterday. The roof sheathing is being installed at this writing, and should be complete by the end of the week.
Later this week and looking ahead, the framer starts on Thursday, and the mason (for the elevator) starts work soon after. The Interior Design Subcommittee (of the Library Construction Committee) will soon finalize colors and put together a furniture order.
Passersby should start seeing walls going up very soon!

The General Contractor reports that the steel framework is complete except for decking, which is being installed now. Perimeter drains, backfill of the fire suppression tank, and construction of the electrical room are also complete. Boulders are being removed today.
Next week's activities include backfilling the exterior slab and finishing decking.
The library topping off event is this Saturday from 9-11 a.m. Come by the site and sign your name on the remaining beam! See the Library Calendar for details.

Steel has arrived and the framework will take shape in the coming weeks. Watch this space for the time and date of our next milestone: the topping-off ceremony!

The large crane that some residents noticed on the lot about recently was there to install the structure for the 36,000 gallon water storage tank (for fire suppression). Installation is now complete, including backfill. At the back of the library, workers have completed cutting through the exterior wall and shored up the opening. This will become the connector between the old and new buildings. Steel should arrive next week. Progress has been somewhat slow due to the weather, but the General Contractor and his subs are committed to making up for lost time whenever they can.
The interior design committee met recently to look at photos of furniture, and to narrow down color choices. We also met with a group of teens who are helping to design their space. It's pleasing to see that take shape, as the library's small size severely limited service to teens in the past.

The foundation walls are complete! Installation of waterproofing in the 1903 building's basement starts today. Later this week, the fire suppression storage tank will be set in place on the east side of the building. The General Contractor is preparing the site to receive an order of steel.
2/17/09
More of the same: construction of foundation walls is ongoing, as is rough electrical and waterproofing prep. Work on drainage structures will begin shortly.
1/29/09
The footings are complete. Work continues on the walls and electrical. Preparation for waterproofing begins soon.
1/22/09
The Boulder (see 1/8/09) has been drilled, split, and removed from the site. The old well has been capped. Work continues on foundation, footings, and electrical. The Library Construction Committee's interiors subcommittee met today with the architects and a representative of Stefura Associates to look at possible paint colors, upholstery fabric, carpet, tile, etc.

The General Contractor reports that workers unearthed a boulder approximately 30-40 cubic yards in size at the site! No ledge has yet been found. Weather has limited progress on the foundation, but work continues (even on Saturdays if necessary to make up for lost time) under winter rules. Barring unusually severe weather, the Contractor's goal is to finish the foundation by the end of January. February through April will be very busy, with steel due to arrive in mid-to-late February. Interior work (electrical, waterproofing) is ongoing in the library basement.
12/12/08
Work has begun on the foundation and footings, and the outline of the addition is emerging at the site. Numerous large (and very large) rocks have been unearthed, but so far no ledge has been found. The General Contractor has also begun to examine the back wall, carefully removing a small section of paneling in the center room to reveal how the walls were constructed in 1903.
11/21/08
Groundbreaking on November 8 marked the start of construction on the library addition! Shortly after that day, the General Contractor installed environmental protection (trenches, hay bales) around the perimeter. In the next 2-3 weeks, look for heavy equipment on site as work begins on the foundation and footings.
