What you can do to protect yourself and your property:
- Prepare a To-Go Bag. Suggested items: non-perishable food, water, batter or crank powered radio, flashlights with extra batteries.
- Make a plan. Every family/home should have an family emergency plan. You may not always be together when a disaster strikes. It's important to have a means to communicate with each other, and its important to know how you will get back together. You may include: evacuation plans, family communication plans, Utility shut off and safety, and general safety skills.
- Protect your property. Bring in your outdoor furniture or decorations- anything that isn't tied down and could be blown down the street. Keep your trees and shrubs trimmed so they are more wind resistant. Turn off exterior propane tanks. Install a generator. Fill your bathtubs with water. You can use it for flushing toilets or cleaning. Keep your food cool- limit the opening of your refrigerator. Know what you want to get and get it quickly.
- Stay informed. Hurricane hazards include lightning, tornadoes, flooding, high winds, and for Bolton- potential street and stream flooding. Water running over a road can quickly disable your car, and it may be difficult to see how deep it is. It is also difficult to observe any structural damage to the road.
- If the road is barricaded off by the DPW or police- its usually a pretty good indication that it isn't safe to go through.
- Even though you may not have power at your house- that electric line may be live. Don't remove them yourselves- let the utility company do their job.
