Why the December 5th Town Election still matters…..

The purchase of Camp Virginia was proposed by a Citizens’ Petition.  That purchase was to be funded by a debt exclusion (commonly referred to as a proposition 2 ½ Override).  Whenever an override to Proposition 2 ½ is proposed, a two-step process begins. That process starts with a Town Meeting to authorize the project.  The second step is a Town Election to authorize the funding or borrowing for the project (overriding proposition 2 ½).

The first step in the process began at the Special Town Meeting held on November 27, 2017.  The Citizens’ Petition for the Purchase of Camp Virginia for $1,077,700 required a 2/3 Majority vote. The 2/3 vote is a requirement of the Department of Revenue since the funding for the project proposes an override of Proposition 2 ½. The final vote for the article was Yes: 182 No: 134 resulting in the 2/3 vote NOT being achieved.

The Special Town Election on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 contains the ballot question asking if the town should borrow outside Proposition 2 ½ for this project. If the ballot question passes at the election, the authorization to borrow would be valid for up to one year.

December 5th is a dual election where you will also have the opportunity to vote to fill the open State Senate seat.

Polls are located in the Nashoba Regional High School Auditorium and are open from 7 am – 8 pm.
