Pond Park is flooded and all we need is a cold snap and there will be skating! However, the skating conditions all depend on the number of people who volunteer to help clear the surface after it snows.
For each storm, we have to get the snow off quickly or it will ruin the skating surface. This is a completely volunteer driven effort so if you like skating, then help us keep the pond clear for the season.
The Details For each storm we need 2-3 people with snowblowers and about 3-4 shovelers. We have set up a Facebook page to help coordinate efforts. So, if it snows, check with your friends and neighbors online to see if you can help!
NOTE: Children are not allowed on the ice during the snow clearing. It is very unsafe to have children on the ice when the snow blowers are running.
Safety Tips and Guidelines Ice skating is a fun winter activity, and also a great exercise! The National Safety Council offers the following tips to help you and your family enjoy safe skating:
- Wear skates that fit comfortably and provide enough ankle support to keep you on your feet.
- Have the blades professionally sharpened at the beginning of each season.
- Skate only on skating areas where you are sure the ice is strong enough to withstand your weight.
- Always check for cracks, holes and other debris.
- Before setting out on your skating expedition, learn basic skating skills, such as how to stop and fall safely.
- Wear warm clothing and rest when you become tired or cold.
- Never skate alone.
Also, the Parks and Recreation Commission would like to remind you that the use of the Pond Park Skating Area is at your own risk.
